Infrared photography is a fascinating area of photography that can create some truly unique images. Getting started in infrared photography can be a bit daunting, especially for those who are new to the game. But with a little know-how, it is absolutely possible to get stunning results with infrared photography. So here’s a beginner’s guide to mastering infrared photography.
1. Get the right camera
The first thing you’ll need is an infrared capable camera. Not all cameras come with this feature, so make sure you check before you buy. You’ll also want to note that some cameras require modifications to capture infrared images - so if you don’t want to modify your camera, check to see if it comes with this feature. Such cameras will be able to capture the light outside the visible spectrum, allowing you to produce some surreal and fascinating images.
2. Choose the right lens
It is vital to choose the right lens for your infrared shots, as different lenses will impact the results you get. Some lenses can cause hotspots, where the center of the image becomes brighter than other parts; others may lead to more pronounced vignetting. Make sure you choose a lens that is well suited to infrared photography and offers minimal distortion or loss of detail.
3. Know your infrared filters
There are many different types of infrared filters out there, and each filter produces slightly different results. A popular filter known as the Hoya R72 creates a distinctive red hue in the image, while other filters, such as the Wratten 89B, may produce more yellow or even white tones. Experiment with different filters to see which one gives the result you prefer.
4. Adjust your white balance
Infrared photography tends to create images with a dominant color cast. This can be corrected using your camera’s white balance controls. bear in mind that this also depends on the infrared filter you are using, and the lighting conditions when taking your shot. Experimenting is key.
5. Watch your exposure settings
You will likely need to adjust your exposure settings to get optimal results when shooting infrared. This is particularly true if you’re using an unmodified camera. 7. Master post-processing
Post-processing is where many of the most interesting results are achieved in infrared photography. Since infrared captures information that our eyes cannot see, the final image can be completely otherworldly. Use post-production editing software to experiment with different color corrections, contrast settings, and dodge and burn techniques. Experimenting with different filters can also lead to creative and surprising results.
